Online curriculum resources and digital architecture

One of the key goals of the Digital Education Revolution is to ensure that learning through the use of innovative learning technologies is given a strong foundation in all schools.

The Australian Government has committed $32.6 million over two years to work toward this objective with state and territory school authorities and Catholic and independent school sectors, building on existing work. These funds will be used to:

  • Develop curriculum resources, focusing on the key learning areas of English, mathematics, the sciences, history, languages and geography, in alignment with the national curriculum as this is developed and in accordance with agreed quality and technical standards;
  • Provide access to, and promote the useability of, high quality learning resources from digital repositories, from schools and academic institutions as well as from cultural and scientific organisations;
  • Support the development of policies, protocols, infrastructure and standards required to enable schools to safely and seamlessly communicate, collaborate and access and use resources across school, system and jurisdictional boundaries.

The online curriculum resources and digital architecture initiative will be achieved through high levels of collaboration and coordination across school jurisdictions and sectors.

The Australian government is working collaboratively with the Australian Information and Communications Technology in Education Committee (AICTEC) to “support the development of policies, protocols, infrastructure and standards required to enable schools to safely and seamlessly communicate, collaborate and access and use resources across school, system and jurisdictional boundaries”.

As a result, the Intellectual Property & Privacy in Technology Advisory Group (IPPTAG) has been established to provide policy and strategic advice to AICTEC on information accountability issues which include copyright, intellectual property and privacy that may affect the national implementation of the Digital Education Revolution. The Australian Government, with advice from IPPTAG, is currently developing a number of discrete projects that will investigate these issues in education.

As these projects are developed more information will be made available.

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations is seeking a proposal from an experienced service provider with strong knowledge and understanding of copyright arrangements in the Australian school sector. This project will describe current copyright practices relating to the development of curriculum materials for the school sector. The project report will provide:

  • a detailed description of current copyright practices relating to the development of curriculum materials for the school sector
  • an education copyright matrix to assist teachers to make an informed choice about both what they use and also how they licence their own material education materials for their classes from appropriately licensed material for their situation, including the ability to adapt or modify material according to local needs, and
  • recommendations for implementation of the copyright matrix across government and non-government school sectors.
